[Jerry Rafats; National Agricultural Library (U.S.)]. Vernonia (Vernonia galamensis L.) or ironweed, is one of 6, wild plant species screened by the USDA for production of desirable seed oils. This potential oilseed crop is native to eastern Africa. There are over 1, species in the genus ranging from tropical herbaceous species to North American shrubs.

A 'split' approach was adopted in the revision of Potential new crop taxonomical treatment by Gilbert () because of the interest in the species as a potential oilseed crop.

Morphology and Floral Biology The flower head (capitula) are very variable in size. Vernonia galamensis (Cass.) Less. has potential for domestication as a new industrial oilseed source of natural epoxy fatty acids.

Thirty-four accessions from the six subspecies of the Vernonia galamensis complex were characterized for seed weight, seed oil content, and fatty acid composition. The mean seed weight of the six subspecies was g/ seeds, with a range of.

Iron Weed (Vernonia anthelmintica) is an important medicinal and industrial oilseed plant of the family Asteraceae. It has immense potential for cultivation as commercial medicinal and oilseed. Vernonia anthelmintica (L.) Willd. was investigated as a potential seed oil source of epoxy acid.

During the period to 66, phenological studies were January 1970-November 1988 book at Glenn Dale, Md. Fruit development stages of plants were identified quantitatively and related to seed yield.

Vernonia galamensis is a wild plant from the family Asteraceae which is endemic to East Africa and has the potential to become a new oil crop for industrial uses. Its seed oil is rich in vernolic acid, a fatty acid of high interest for oleochemical applications.

However, a breeding program for Vernonia galamensis cultivars with high seed and oil yields requires knowledge about the genetic. Day neutal varieties of Vernonia galamensis were successfully developed in the early ’s to facilitate future commercial development of this crop in North America (Thompson et al., ).

The oil content of Centrapalus pauciflorus is between 35 and 42%, 72–80% of which is vernolic acid (Baye et al.,Thompson et al., ). Vernonia (Vernonia galamensis) is a new potential industrial oilseed crop. The seeds of this crop contain unusual naturally epoxidised fatty acids which are used in the production of various.

Vernonia (Vernonia galamensis) is an industrial oil seed crop with potential as a source of natural epoxy fatty e accessions of V. galamensis var. ethiopica were studied at the Limpopo Province in South Africa to determine agronomic performance and to identify suitable germplasm with quantity and quality seed oil content.

Thirty‐six accessions were subjected to field evaluations. Welcome to Vernonia High School Reunions. Find all past and upcoming high school reunions for Vernonia High School - Vernonia, OR. You can plan your next reunions for free.

Vernonia [Vernonia galamensis (Cass.)Less.; 2n = 18] is a relatively new crop in many parts of Africa. Most of Vernonia species occur in South America but more than species from Africa have been described with most occurring in Ethiopia and Madagascar. Apart from these two countries, vernonia is also grown in Cape Verde, Eritrea, Mozambique, northern Tanzania and Senegal (Fig.
